The Behrend Lady Lions softball team started their season this month with high hopes for a successful season.
Similar to all of the other students here at Penn State Behrend, the softball team headed for warmer weather, but not for a vacation. The Lady Lions kicked off their season in Plant City, Florida to participate in the Sunkissed Games. Going into this season, Behrend was chosen to finish first in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) in the 2019 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The girls ended their season last year with a record of 32-13 finishing second place in the AMCC where they lost the title of AMCC Championship to Mt. Aloysius.
Behrend kicked off their week of games on Sunday, March 3 and wrapped up the Sunkissed Games on Saturday, March 9 after competing in 10 games. The Lady Lions finished their Florida tournament with a 6-4 record. Penn State Behrend’s big wins were their victories over Ohio Northern University (10-9), Aurora University (8-6), and Emerson University (12-2). Behrend also defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Bluffton University, and Saint Joseph’s of Maine College. The teams who defeated the Lady Lions in the Sunkissed Games were Heidelberg University, Illinois College, Muskingum University, and College of Saint Benedict. After the Florida tournament Behrend rested for a week before being back on the road with a double header in Newport, Virginia.
On Saturday, March 16, Penn State Behrend took on the Captains of Christopher Newport University. In the first game the Lions fell to Christopher Newport with a score of 11-1. Freshman, Kylee Bundy, was able to put Behrend on the score board with a run off of a RBI from junior, Alayna Derzak. The Lady Lions were able to cover more ground in the second game of the day. They started the game off with 2-0, until the Captains scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore, Mackenzie McIntire, led Penn State Behrend with three RBI’s with a fly and a double. Senior, AJ Nichols also had a nice showing, finishing the game with two hits, two runs, and one RBI. Unfortunately, Penn State Behrend fell to Christopher Newport in the second game as well, with a final score of 13-5.
After a commendable showing in Plan City, Florida, it is clear the Lady Lions of Penn State Behrend are going to be a force to be reckoned with again this year. With putting this weekend in Newport, Virginia behind them, the Lady Lions look towards the rest of their season, fighting once again to make it to the AMCC playoffs. If the preseason polls serve as a positive indication of things to come, the girls have an excellent chance of making a deep postseason run. The Lady Lions’ will take the field again this weekend at the Penn State Behrend softball fields against Thiel College on Saturday, March 23. The team is taking on the Tomcats in a non-conference double header with the first game starting at 1pm and the second at 3pm.
